If you want a read on where China’s consumer economy is today, don’t look at retail sales charts or PMI surveys. Go stand in an airport. Planes are jammed, boarding gates spill over, and families are lugging duty-free bags back home again.
Travel and tourism are driving the rebound, and I don’t think it’s just a seasonal burst. It looks more like the beginning of China’s “back to normal” economy.
