A founder-led platform compounding 30% a year, trading at just ~7x 2027 FCF.

As some of you already know, I opened a position in Shift4 last week. It’s still small for me, but this is one I plan to keep building.

The quick pitch is simple enough: a $7.5 billion market cap company growing ~30% a year, with clear operating leverage and a roadmap to roughly $1 billion in free cash flow by 2027. The founder is still deeply involved and has been buying shares in the open market. It’s a high-ROIC way to own a sticky payments/commerce platform that the market keeps mislabeling.

That’s the investment case in nutshell. But simple doesn’t mean small. The more I dig into Shift4, the more I see a business that’s being mispriced because investors are still thinking about it like a “vertical processor” rather than what it’s actually becoming: a sticky, software-led commerce platform with expanding global reach.

Why the market keeps discounting it honestly puzzles me. Maybe it’s because most folks lump the whole payments space into one bucket—hyper-competitive and commoditized. Yes, competition is fierce. But commoditized? Absolutely not. Once you own the workflow (POS + ordering + loyalty + payments), you’re embedded infrastructure. That’s where Shift4 lives.

And this isn’t some niche footprint either. Shift4 already runs payments for about a third of U.S. sit-down restaurants, around 40% of the hotels, and close to three-quarters of the pro sports stadiums.

So, odds are if you’ve grabbed a beer at a ballgame or checked into a hotel lately, you’ve probably used their rails without even knowing it.

Business Overview

Shift4 is a commerce platform with two main jobs: run the front-end software a merchant uses to take your money, and run the back-end rails that actually move the money. They make money on both.
